Expansion of Main Brazos Valley Thoroughfare Planned

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), seeing significant continued growth in the Brazos Valley, has plans to improve and expand the capacity of the main north-south thoroughfare through Bryan/College Station.

On August 30, 2018, the Texas Transportation Commission approved the 2019 Unified Transportation Program (UTP), which includes $216 million in planned funding for the widening of State Highway 6, the region’s primary route on the Texas Highway Freight Network

Already a safe, interstate-quality roadway which has seen recent improvements to its entrance and exit ramps, officials with TxDOT’s Bryan District Office say SH6 would be expanded to at least three lanes in each direction from State Highway 21 at the north to State Highway 40 at the south.

Interchanges and frontage roads along the same stretch would be improved and expanded with funds noted in the UTP and any additional funds.

Under the current plan, the initial construction on SH6 would begin in 2021 following planning by TxDOT and the Bryan/College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization, along with public input.

TxDOT notes because of the importance of SH6 to the region, its businesses and its residents, the plan is to work around the current lanes of traffic and not impact transportation and travel.
